Title: Feminicide and Feminist Performance

While in the larger context Mexico does not have the worst record of feminicide by numbers or by rate in Latin America or the world, much international attention has spotlighted the US-Mexico border city of Ciudad Juárez--and rightly so, for the terrible history of mutilation and slaughter of young women since the 1990s. This presentation discusses a few examples of social justice oriented performances that speak to thegender violence in that city as a tragic emblem of a larger global problem.

The inaugural speaker for the Sandra Cypress Lecture series is Dr. Debra Ann Castillo (Cornell University). Debra Castillo is Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow, Emerson Hinchliff Chair of Hispanic Studies, Professor of Comparative Literature, and director of the Cornell Migration Studies minor. She is past president of the international, interdisciplinary Latin American Studies Association.

She is the holder of a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellowship, which is Cornell University’s highest teaching award, and is granted for excellence in undergraduate teaching. She regularly teaches courses on Latinx, Border Studies, and Migration issues for both graduate and undergraduate students.
