The Jupiter String Quartet, an “ensemble of eloquent intensity,” performs to acclaim across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America in the world’s finest halls—including Krannert Center’s Foellinger Great Hall at the University of Illinois where the Jupiter is Quartet-in-Residence (The New Yorker). Joining the quartet for a portion of this concert is pianist Gloria Chien who leads a diverse musical life as a noted performer, concert presenter, and educator. Selected by the Boston Globe as one of its Superior Pianists of the year, “who appears to excel in everything,” Chien performs frequently with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The evening’s program, American Prism, is inspired by diverse US musical traditions as they are brought to life in string quartets by American composers from the last 125 years. To conclude the program, Gloria Chien will join the quartet for Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet, Op. 67, a beautifully rhapsodic work by one of the earliest female American composers to be widely recognized for her work.
