The Spurlock Museum of World Cultures is excited to announce a new discussion-based film series, International Activism in Film. The series is a part of Spurlock’s current exhibit, Debates, Decisions, Demands: Objects of Campaigns and Activism (Oct. 16, 2020 -May 23, 2021), and will offer a closer look at five award-winning films from Brazil, Cambodia, Czech Republic, India, and South Africa. The discussions will take place over Zoom and are free to attend, no registration required.
The series will launch on Wed., Jan., 27 at 7:00 pm CT in a discussion of The Legend of Bhagat Singh (India, 2002), a historical biopic about a young man, Bhagat Singh, played by actor Ajay Devgan, trying to help free Colonial India from British rule.
Professor Nilanjana Bhattcharjya, of Arizona State University will offer insight on the film’s cultural and historical context. Dr. Bhattacharjya, honors faculty fellow and principal lecturer at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, has published widely in South Asian Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Musicology.
On February 17 at 7:00pm CT, we will be joined by Robert Tigan of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, who will discuss the film Milada (Czech Republic, 2017), also a historical biopic about the politician Milada Horáková and her resistance to a communist coup in that country.
Other films in the series will include The Edge of Democracy (Brazil, 2019), First They Killed My Father (Cambodia, 2017), and Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu (South Africa, 2016).
