Abstract:

The medical community produces massive amounts of patient and research data. There are significant challenges that hinder the effective use and interpretation of this data. UIUC’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is contributing its expertise in high-performance computation, cyberinfrastructure, software development, analytics, and visualization to address obstacles and improve patient care. Information design plays an important role, enabling the assessment of evidence and the study of data to help generate hypotheses and draw conclusions.

Biography:

Colleen Bushell is director of healthcare innovation at NCSA. She is a pioneer in the field of data visualization and web development. As an associate professor of graphic design, she taught information design before co-founding NCSA spin-off company RiverGlass to create software tools for text analysis. Recent efforts focus on converting complex information into meaningful visuals and interactive workflows that help people understand biomedical data. Colleen earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts from UIUC.
