This virtual workshop, to take place from 5-7 p.m. (Central time) will be led by graduates of the departments of Linguistics and French & Italian, and Fred Davidson, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics.

The speakers

Nyssa Bulkes received a PhD from the Illinois Department of Linguistics in 2017, in the field of psycholinguistics. After a postdoc in cognitive neuroscience of language at the University of Arizona, she worked for Kohl's Corporate in measurement analytics and A/B test design, and is now a data scientist at Rogers Behavioral Health.

Stephanie Landblom has just completed her PhD in Linguistics at Illinois, with a dissertation on the second language acquisition of phonology, and is about to graduate in December 2020. She has just begun working as a senior research analyst at the Idaho Division of Career and Technical Education.

Brad Miller received a PhD from the Illinois Department of Linguistics in 2017, with a dissertation on business discourse and consensus building. Since then, he has held a number of positions at Procter & Gamble, where he is currently site director for P&G Smart Lab.

Erin Rusaw received a PhD from the Illinois Department of Linguistics in 2013, in the area of phonology, specifically, speech production timing. She is now working for Google as an analytical linguist.

Chris Stewart received a PhD from the Illinois Department of French in 2009, in the areas of sociophonetics and psycholinguistics. He has held a variety of positions, including as an assistant professor of French Linguistics at the University of Texas‐Arlington, a voice‐engineer at Nuance Communications in Belgium, and a senior data scientist at the TCS consulting company and at the Narrative Wave startup. He is currently working for Google as an analytical linguist.

Yuancheng Tu received a PhD from the Illinois Department of Linguistics in 2012, in the field of computational linguistics, and immediately joined Microsoft, where she is now a senior applied scientist working in Microsoft Assistant and Intelligence Team.

Fred Davidson is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University of Illinois. An alumnus of the Illinois MATESL program (1981), he received a PhD in Applied Linguistics from UCLA in 1988, and worked for a year for the Illinois State Board of Education prior to joining the University of Illinois in 1990. He taught in the MATESL program at Illinois until his retirement in 2014.
