National Poetry Slam Champion Elizabeth Acevedo received the 2018 National Book Award for her New York Times best selling novel, Poet X. She is also the winner of the Boston-Globe Hornbook Award Prize for Best Children's Fiction and the author of Clap When You Land, With the Fire On High and the chapbook Beastgirl and Other Origin Myths.
 
Free copies of Elizabeth Acevedo's novels Poet X and Clap When You Land are available to pick up starting next week, September 15 at La Ventanita at La Casa Cultural Latina, 1203 W. Nevada, Urbana.  The first 30 students can pick up a free book on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10-12pm at La Ventanita at La Casa!
 
On Monday, September 28, 6-7:30pm, the Department of Latina/Latino Studies will be hosting a pre-event discussion of the themes in Elizabeth Acevedo's books including themes of race, transnationalism, identity, body image, and family. Regardless of whether you have read Acevedo's books, we invite you to join us for this pre-event discussion. Bring your experiences and perspectives and share your thoughts!
