Constitution Day 2020: The Presidency

Thursday, September 17, 2020

12 pm

Keynote Speaker

Saikrishna Prakash

James Monroe Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Virginia

Moderated by Jason Mazzone

Albert E. Jenner, Jr. Professor of Law

Constitution Day occurs just 47 days before the presidential election, at a time of great national division, and very different public views about the appropriate powers of the President and constraints on presidential authority.

Join us for a lively discussion on the origins of the presidency, changes in the President’s roles over time, the benefits to and risks of strong executive authority, and possible responses to presidential overreaching or misconduct—all with a view to thinking about the best role for the President in our twenty-first century democracy, regardless of the outcome of the November election.

Saikrishna Prakash is a renowned presidential scholar. His most recent book,

The Living Presidency: An Originalist Argument against Its Ever-Expanding Powers, was published in 2020 by Harvard University Press.

Open to the public, with audience Q&A.

REGISTER TO ATTEND

Copies of The Living Presidency will be made available by lottery to audience members.

*Eligibility requires advance registration and attendance at the entire event.
