Taking place on University of Illinois Homecoming Saturday, this program opens with Arthur Honegger’s "Pastorale d’été," a sweet symphonic poem evoking the peaceful calm of a summer morning. The short work is colorfully orchestrated, with rich melodies and an atmospheric quality.
Next is the world premiere of David Canfield’s recent "Concerto after Elgar," composed for Sinfonia’s principal violist, Csaba Erdélyi. The work, inspired by the famous Elgar "Cello Concerto," features long melodies and unbelievably virtuosic writing for the viola soloist. Finally, DvoĆák’s "Symphony No. 8" has been described by "The Guardian" as “35 minutes of life-enhancing joy.” Positivity and optimism are evident from the start, which continues through to an intense and joyous finale.
