Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH)

A 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction and member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, Luis Alberto Urrea is the critically acclaimed and best-selling author of 17 books, winning numerous awards for his poetry, fiction and essays. Born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and American mother, Urrea is most recognized as a border writer, though he says, “I am more interested in bridges, not borders.” His newest book, The House of Broken Angels, is a novel of an American family, which happens to be from Mexico. Angel de la Cruz knows this is his last birthday and he wants to gather his progeny for a final fiesta.

Meagan Cass' first full-length collection, ActivAmerica, won the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction and was published by UNT Press in 2017. Her stories have appeared in Hayden’s Ferry Review, DIAGRAM, Joyland, and Puerto del Sol, among other places. She teaches creative writing and publishing at University of Illinois Springfield, where she received the 2016 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Award and founded the Shelterbelt Reading Series. She is a co-founder and managing editor, with Amy Sayre Baptista, of Craft Chaps, a series of substantive essays on creative writing craft by contemporary writers. She lives in St. Louis.
