Changes in caregiving and personal assistance among older adults with disability in Mexico: 2001-2015

The Mexican population is aging very fast. At the same time, the prevalence rates of chronic conditions and disability have been increasing. In this context, families and communities are tasked to provide most of the caregiving needs of older adults. In this presentation, I use data collected between 2001 and 2015 as part of the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) to examine trends and characteristics of disability, received care and unmet needs. Results indicate that a higher proportion of older adults report having difficulties performing daily activities, such as eating and getting out of the bed independently. However, family caregiving patterns seem to be changing and unmet needs seem to be increasing.
