Writers Workshop General Events

Application Deadline: Friday, July 26, at 11:59pm; use the "Application" link above.

The Writing Retreat provides advanced graduate students with a place and a time to make efficient, distraction-free progress on thesis or dissertation writing in a supportive atmosphere. It also provides tools and resources to create positive writing habits. You are eligible to apply if you are a Master's or PhD student who has passed your proposal, collected most of the research for your project, and begun the writing process.

Expectations:

The retreat provides structured writing, break, and discussion time. Participants should commit to write from 9-12:30 each morning. In the afternoons, participants may elect to attend a workshop or continue writing. The optional workshop topics will include: goal setting, (re)committing to a writing routine, and staying on track with writing goals; asking for and using feedback; revision strategies; and other topics.

Application:

Because space is limited—and because we want writers to have a productive retreat—we ask that you complete an application to attend. On the application, you will be asked to provide information about your anticipated timeline for completing your degree. You also will need to upload a 250-300 word description of your thesis or dissertation, including an estimate of how much has already been written (percentage), reasons for attending the retreat, and two specific goals you’d like to accomplish during the retreat. Participants must commit to being present for the full week of the retreat and must attend from at least 9—12:30 each day. Applications are due by Friday, July 26, at 11:59pm; your attendance will be confirmed by Monday, July 29. Please contact us at wow@illinois.edu with any questions.
