The University Library, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Spurlock Museum invite you to a presentation by Scott Schwartz of the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music, and Barry Houser, Director of the Marching Illini.

The two will share how John Philip Sousa and the University of Illinois became catalysts for the creation of university and school bands across the country. The presentation will feature preserved materials, instruments, and performances from the late 19th century to the present, featuring historic instruments. Schwartz and Houser will describe how they work to ensure the preservation of and access to the music and artifacts. 

Dr. Elizabeth Sutton, Director of the Spurlock Museum, will kick off the evening with a discussion of the importance of access to and preservation of cultural artifacts.

Heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served
