Democracy is under threat. In countries around the world, key components of democracy—including freedom of speech and the press, free and fair elections, independent courts, and constraints on executive power—are declining. Popular support for democracy is also dropping, particularly among young people. Will democracy continue to backslide? What will democracy look like in the future? What are its alternatives? How does the United States compare to other countries?
