"Computational methods for calibration and characterization of superconducting quantum devices"


AbstractAs superconducting quantum systems grow increasingly large, so do the number of required device calibrations and potential loss channels throughout the system. These challenges create important bottlenecks to scaling superconducting quantum processors toward practical applications. In this talk, we describe progress in two directions toward more scalable calibration and characterization of superconducting quantum devices. First, we develop an autonomous measurement and detection framework for identifying defects in superconducting devices, which are ubiquitous in the field and present a serious barrier to scalability. This framework enables systematic characterization of defect densities across large datasets and different fabrication treatments. Second, we introduce an autonomous, closed-loop calibration protocol for qubits which scales favorably compared to conventional methods. Together, these approaches represent steps towards realizing a suite of computationally assisted methods for efficiently understanding and operating increasingly complex superconducting quantum systems.


Bio: Oliver Wolff is a fourth year graduate student working with Wolfgang Pfaff, studying methods to better characterize and control superconducting quantum devices.
