Abstract
Dow is a worldwide technical leader in the emulsion polymerization of acrylates for organic coatings applications. Emulsion polymerization provides several unique processing advantages compared to bulk or solution free-radical polymerization techniques. This presentation will provide an introduction to Dow’s Coating Materials business and the innovative emulsion polymers we develop. An overview of emulsion polymerization will be discussed, with an emphasis on the reaction mechanism and processing variables. A variety of other key topics will also be addressed including particle morphology, the mechanism of film formation, and characterization techniques. Lastly, an evaluation of these materials in exterior coating applications will be highlighted.

Timothy P. Moneypenny II, Ph.D. joined Dow in 2018 and is currently an Associate Research Scientist at Dow Coatings Materials (DCM) in Collegeville, PA. At DCM, he synthesizes emulsion polymers to support the Architectural and Industrial coatings businesses. Recently, he was involved in the scale up of a product for the exterior architectural coatings market that is now commercially successful. Before joining Dow, he received his PhD at the University of Illinois in 2018 where he worked in the lab of Prof. Jeff Moore investigating microporous organic materials.
