“Methodological Issues in Studying Human-Machine Relations: Interviews in Artificial Intelligence Research”

Research regarding Artificial Intelligence is expanding but comes with methodological hurdles. The ambiguities surrounding the definition of AI, people’s different levels of knowledge about AI, and the multiple of ways in which people may interact with AI raise the potential for misunderstanding and misalignment between researchers and participants. In her research regarding human-machine communication, Dr. Guzman has interviewed nearly 100 people regarding their understanding and use of AI. Drawing from her experience, Dr. Guzman will explain the challenges of using qualitative methods and interviews to study artificial intelligence and explain strategies for best designing research that accounts for the complexity of how people articulate their experiences with and understanding of AI.
