Community-engaged research is most meaningful when community members are not only participants, but true partners. Building equitable partnerships within the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process, however, involves practical decisions that aren't always straightforward.
Researchers, community partners, and staff and students who support community-engaged research are invited to join us for Navigating the IRB with community research collaborators, a virtual panel discussion, on Thursday, Nov. 5, from noon to 1 p.m.
This panel brings together three speakers who see the IRB process from different vantage points. Each will share how they approach collaborative research in their role, what they wish others understood about it, and the strategies that help academic and community partners move through IRB review as a team.
PANELISTS
Cheri Pettey | Director, Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (OPRS), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Tara Powell | Professor and Associate Dean for Research, School of Social Work, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Laura Edwards | Vice President of Home & Community Based Services, Lindsey Communities, Urbana, ILAttendees will leave with practical tips for structuring collaboration, preparing community partners for their role in the process, and obtaining meaningful, ethical consent.
This event is part of the Community Engaged Research Series, supported by the College of Education, Social & Behavioral Science Institute (SBSI), Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI), College of Applied Health Sciences, College of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Social Work, and Office of the Provost.
