The Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) team at the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) invites researchers to a three-session causal modeling webinar series on Oct. 28 beginning at noon. Chuck Huber, Director of Statistical Outreach at StataCorp LLC and Adjunct Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the Texas A&M School of Public Health and at the New York University School of Global Public Health, will provide an accessible introduction to causal modeling as a statistical approach across health, social, behavioral, educational, and other applied sciences.

Researchers often go beyond asking whether two factors are associated to understand how and why an effect occurs, and whether an intervention or exposure actually causes a change in an outcome. This webinar series will introduce fundamental concepts in causal inference and treatment effects and explore how structural equation modeling (SEM) and mediation analysis can be used to examine direct and indirect pathways. Practical examples will demonstrate how these methods can be implemented and interpreted using Stata. Dr. Huber will emphasize the rationale behind these methods, the questions they can help answer, and important considerations when interpreting causal effects.

Designed for researchers and practitioners across health, social, behavioral, educational, and related sciences, the sessions will emphasize the rationale behind these methods, the questions they can help answer, and important considerations when interpreting causal effects.

Agenda

  • Noon – 12:50 p.m. | Session 1: Introduction to Causal Inference and Treatment Effects
  • 1 – 2:20 p.m. | Session 2: Structural Equation Modeling
  • 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. | Session 3: Introduction to Mediation Analysis

About the presenter
Chuck Huber is Director of Statistical Outreach at StataCorp LLC and Adjunct Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the Texas A&M School of Public Health and at the New York University School of Global Public Health. In addition to working with Stata's team of software developers, he produces instructional videos for the Stata YouTube channel, writes blog entries, develops online NetCourses, and gives talks about Stata at conferences and universities. Most of his current work is focused on statistical methods used by behavioral and health scientists. He has published in the areas of neurology, human and animal genetics, alcohol and drug abuse prevention, nutrition, and birth defects. Dr. Huber currently teaches survey sampling at NYU and introductory biostatistics at Texas A&M, where he previously taught categorical data analysis, survey data analysis, and statistical genetics.
