The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) invites Illinois faculty, staff, and student researchers to a Zoom presentation on Methodological Challenges in Health Equity Research by Sima Sharghi from Akron Children's Hospital on Feb. 19 at noon.
Hosted by the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) team at IHSI and aligned with IHSI's commitment to health equity, this event will provide insights into how researchers can embed justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity throughout their work, from the inception of their studies to the dissemination of their findings. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between individual and neighborhood-level factors and how they can inform policies and interventions to create a more just and inclusive society.
As highlighted in the recent publication, Race, Ethnicity, and Considerations for Data Collection and Analysis in Research Studies, Sharghi will:
- Discuss the critical importance of race and ethnicity in data collection and analysis
- Explore the challenges of using these social constructs in observational studies and how to decide when they should be applied
- Delve into the Child Opportunity Index (COI) and its potential as an alternative measure to account for neighborhood-level factors impacting children's health and development
Sharghi aims to promote equity and improve outcomes for underrepresented populations by integrating these perspectives. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A.
