Faculty Seminar Series on Teaching & Learning

Theme: "The Art of the Engaging, Responsive Lecture"

Instructors “can improve student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference; many of which can be put into practice in a single class period” (J. Lang, Small Teaching).

Come join us as we explore a number of these strategies and approaches in “The Art of the Engaging, Responsive Lecture”

Click here for the F'24 Faculty Workshop Series flyer

You are invited to join a dynamic learning community by participating in this specially designed workshop series for all faculty (across all disciplines and rank). We’ll share strategies and best practices from research-based pedagogy. Come and meet new colleagues. Great conversations and handouts guaranteed.

Session 6: Going Beyond the Traditional Syllabus: Engaging Your Students Emotionally and Visually

Are the main goals for a syllabus to

  • Serve as a contract?
  • State the topics for the course?
  • List the assignments and exams?

Yes, that’s true, but don’t limit your syllabus to being just a static document. A syllabus can do so much more! It can serve as a way to let your students see your passion and excitement about the course and show that you care and are supportive in their learning.

What are some thoughtful, innovative enhancements to your syllabus that will engage your students emotionally and visually? Join us as we begin transforming your traditional syllabus to a more engaging one. In addition, we’ll also help you identify and create a graphical “big idea” for your course.

*This workshop counts towards completion of any of CITL's Teaching Certificates. To learn more about our Teaching Certificate program please visit https://go.illinois.edu/teaching_certificates.

Please mark these dates on your calendar. We hope that you will be able to join us in all the sessions of the series.
