11:00am, Julie Cidell, Geography & Geographic Information Science, Corridors and Confluences: Four-Dimensional Spaces of Distribution along and around the Des Plaines-Kankakee River Confluence

The area near the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee Rivers in northeastern Illinois contains the largest inland port in North America. Centuries of flows of water, traders, settlers, and non-humans have defined a corridor that exists in four dimensions and can help us rethink the spatiality and temporality of infrastructure. This paper considers these rivers and their surroundings as infrastructural corridors; discusses the changing height and depth of the corridors; explains the anistropic character of corridors; and considers the multiple temporalities that inhabit these corridors today.

Noon, Nicole Riemer, Atmospheric Sciences, Aerosols: Tiny Particles, Big Impacts

Aerosol particles are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and have profound impacts on human health and the Earth’s climate. This presentation will show application highlights of the ultra-high-resolution aerosol model that Professor Riemer has been developing in her research group and with collaborators at the University of Illinois and around the world.
