Abstract:
Climate change is likely have a large impact on UK agriculture, and the viability of current crops in particular. The Alan Turing Institute is pursuing a project together with some of the leading agricultural and meteorological institutions in the UK to use Data Science, Machine Learning and AI to integrate data and models of plant development, plant pathology, crop yields, and climate science to form an integrated national crop modelling framework for the UK. This would allow predictions of the long-term impact of climate change on UK agriculture over the coming 50 years. The broader context of this project in the Turing’s Data Science for Science programme will also be discussed.

Speaker Bio: Sebastian Ahnert is a University Lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Cambridge and a Senior Research Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. He gained his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge and then worked as a postdoc in the Bioinformatics group at the Institut Curie in Paris, before returning to Cambridge for a Leverhulme Fellowship, followed by a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and a Gatsby Career Development Fellowship.

All presentations will be recorded and will be available on the CAII website shortly after the presentation.
