Mattia Gazzola, Assistant Professor from the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present "Design and Control of Soft Musculoskeletal Architectures" on Monday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m.
Abstract: We introduce a modeling approach based on assemblies of Cosserat rods for the simulation and characterization of arbitrary muscoloskeletal architectures and soft robots. The obtained solver is coupled to evolutionary optimization techniques for the rational design of soft artificial creatures characterized by different scales and operating across environments. Reinforcement learning control for these distributed mechanical systems is demonstrated. Applications range from slithering, swimming and flying biolocomotion strategies to bio-hybrid robotic systems and CyberOctopuses.
