“Experimental Environments”: Environmental Humanities initiatives the world over have embraced the laboratory/observatory/experiment model as a way to foster cross-disciplinary, collaborative research, but often without much critical reflection on the politics and structures of power that have historically attended this mode of knowledge production. At the same time, there is a growing community of researchers in both the social sciences and humanities who are thinking critically, creatively, and expansively about the laboratory/experiment nexus and its possibilities for new forms of environmental knowledge. This symposium takes a critical lens to the laboratory model to think about its value for collaborative, interdisciplinary knowledge production in the environmental humanities. At the same time, in the spirit of the environmental humanities’ own commitment to inhabiting a space of both critique and action, we hope that our conversation is oriented toward constructive interventions and areas for fruitful collaboration.
