Title: Understanding Disease Spread to Help Insect Pathogens Protect Forests

Abstract: Defoliating insects can devastate forests, but the damage would be far worse if not for specialist, fatal insect pathogens.  By applying mathematical models to data on pathogen dynamics, my lab has played a direct role in forest health protection.  Extending our models to include pathogen polymorphism has allowed us to identify new general mechanisms that permit the coexistence of competing pathogen strains.
