Health Communication in a Post-Pandemic World: Lessons Learned and Implications to Research and Practice.

The disjointed public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted several critical challenges to effective health communication at all levels, including significant deficiencies in robust communication infrastructures needed to support a coordinated response to evolving public health challenges. My presentation will provide an overview and critique of major lessons learned in the field and an update on ongoing system-wide initiatives to improve future health communication response. I will share my thoughts regarding several important implications of these efforts to how researchers and professionals may approach health communication moving forward (specifically, moving away from a traditional transmission and translation model toward a navigation model of health communication), as well as regarding much-needed investments in building a robust national and local communication infrastructure, inviting all to join in a conversation.

This event will also be streamed via Zoom for those cannot attend in person.

NOTE:
Please visit the iSchool event page for more details about the Media, Technology, Infrastructure, and Community: Building a Connected Communication Ecosystem for Social Good panel discussion.

The Institute of Communications Research will be hosting Joseph Turow's talk, "Marketers' Cultivation of Digital Resignation in an AI Media Era" at 12:30 p.m. in 66 Main Library.

This event is co-sponsored by the School of Information Sciences at Illinois (iSchool), Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI), Institute of Communications Research (ICR), and Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising in the College of Media.

Itzhak Yanovitzky (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is a professor of communication and public health, and chair of the SC&I Health and Wellness Faculty Cluster at Rutgers University. He is an expert in the areas of behavior change communication, public policymaking, translational research, and program evaluation. Professor Yanovitzky’s program of research explores effective mechanisms for facilitating use of evidence in policy and practice and building the capacity of communities to apply communication strategies and tools to promote population health. He has extensive experience partnering with collaborators across academic disciplines and sectors to address a range of public health problems, including most recently efforts to address the opioid epidemic and the rising toll of youth depression and suicide. Professor Yanovitzky is the immediate past chair of the Health Communication Division of the International Communication Association and a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Standing Committee on Advancing Science Communication.
