Human-Centered Design in Medical Education

Medical education is designed for people—learners, faculty, staff, patients, and clinical teams—yet educational solutions do not always begin with a deep understanding of the people who will experience them. Human-centered design offers a practical approach for understanding needs, questioning assumptions, generating possibilities, and developing solutions through an iterative process of learning and refinement. This session will introduce key concepts of human-centered design and explore how educators can use them to address challenges and improve learning experiences, programs, processes, and educational practices.

Try It Before You Attend

Before the session, take 3–5 minutes to reflect on the following question:

Think of an educational experience, process, or program that does not seem to work as well as it could for the people who use it. What do you think you understand about their experience—and what might you still need to learn?

There is no need to submit a response. Simply come prepared to discuss your example and explore it through a human-centered design lens during the session.
