Towards remote entanglement schemes with trapped ions

Abstract: Trapped ions are a promising platform for quantum information processing, with exceptional single and two-qubit gate fidelities, and long coherence times demonstrated. Recent work has been made towards remote entanglement schemes that connect nodes in a quantum network. I will discuss our aim and current progress for realizing spin-photon entanglement in the time-bin basis with the 88Sr+ ion in the IQUIST testbed. I will also discuss our efforts on cooling the ions to the motional ground state, and characterizing the ion’s heating rate in the trap, which can affect the fidelity of remote entanglement schemes. Finally, I will briefly outline a new project to demonstrate hybrid entanglement between different platforms via quantum frequency conversion of photonic qubits from our 88Sr+ ion.
