According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 60% of adults report experiencing abuse or other difficult family circumstances during childhood. Childhood trauma is linked to higher risks of chronic health conditions (e.g., heart disease, liver disease), mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety), and behavioral problems (e.g., substance abuse, difficulties in relationships) in adulthood. In this lunch & learn training session, Dr. Xiaolei Tang will provide an overview of the potential impact of childhood trauma from both physiological and psychological perspectives, address the importance of a basic understanding of childhood trauma in adult vocational rehabilitation practices, and propose effective strategies for rehabilitation counselors while working with clients who have experienced childhood trauma.
