Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting roughly 11% of children and 4% of adults. It often co-occurs with other neurological and psychiatric conditions, including learning disabilities, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, mood disorders, and substance use disorders. ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which can make functioning in society difficult.

In this lunch & learn session, Stuart Rumrill, Ph.D., LPC, CRC, research evaluation specialist for the Illinois Institute for Rehabilitation and Employment Research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will

  • Break down ADHD and outline its diagnostic criteria.
  • Distinguish genuine ADHD from normal variations in human attention span.
  • Discuss medication options for ADHD and explore whether medication is necessary for managing the condition.
  • Provide an overview of reasonable job accommodation options for vocational rehabilitation (VR) clients with ADHD and how to implement them.
  • Discuss additional ways to support clients with ADHD
  • Highlight the strengths inherent in individuals with ADHD.
