On April 9th, Dr. PJ DiPietro will present a lecture titled  "On the Edge of Living:  Trans Migrants and the Denial of Personhood." The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese:

"This talk examines how travesti/trans and Jotería communities—primarily Latin American, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx gender-nonconforming people—resist colonial legacies. Drawing on the lived experiences of travesti/trans and Jotería migrants, the talk documents narrative devices and cultural artifacts through which these communities navigate multiple forms of violence, including denial of healthcare, criminalization, and early death. Rather than seeking inclusion in mainstream institutions to fend off violence, these migrant populations recreate ancestral and decolonizing modes of belonging and communing. In fact, their bodily projects reject both colonial gender binaries and the pressure to become legible as “human.” "

Dr. Pietro is an associate professor in the Department of Women's and Gender studies at Syracuse University. See more on the flyer attached.
