Physics - Colloquium

Abstract: Just as large portions of the electromagnetic spectrum can only be accessed from space, the gravitational wave band below 10 Hertz is best explored using a space based detector. After 50 years of development, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is under construction for launch next decade. I will describe the unique scientific promise and practical challenges of the LISA observatory, and the ongoing work being undertaken to prepare for this revolutionary mission.
