Abstract
Consolidation of dairy production creates trade-offs that matter to the dairy industry, scientists, community development professionals and community residents. Using a survey of 8 Idaho dairy counties with 374 responses, we jointly model overall perceptions of dairy industry impact on communities and community impact of adopting a new dairy waste technology. We find the industry is perceived as having a positive impact overall. Respondents with favorable views of the dairy industry are more likely to see adoption of new waste management technology positively. Natural, social, and financial community capitals emerged as important considerations. Outreach that highlights tangible benefits of waste management technologies, economic impacts, and working with the community to address social and infrastructure issues may further strengthen perceptions of the industry and its role in supporting local economic and social well-being.
