Why Academics Need to Engage in Public Engagement
Abstract: Communicating academic research to a broad audience has become a prerequisite for success in today’s academic environment. This presentation discusses numerous facets of academic research communication, with a focus on hands-on application of various techniques and principles to enhance your ability to reach a broad and diverse audience. Examples are provided to illustrate various techniques and principles of communication. By using communication as a branding tool, academic researchers can create both a media presence for themselves, but also promulgate the value of their research to the general population.
Biography: Sheldon H. Jacobson is a Founder Professor in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Jacobson’s research focuses on data-driven risk-based decision-making applied to problems in homeland security, public health, public policy, and sports. His research on risk-based aviation security led to the design and implementation of TSA PreCheck. He has received numerous awards for this research, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
