Joseph D. Smith earned a PhD in chemical engineering at Brigham Young University. American Western University Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Smith has served on the faculty at Tennessee Technological University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  He was selected as the founding Wayne and Gayle Laufer Endowed Energy Chair at Missouri University of Science and Technology, where he led the Energy Research and Development Center and founded the Small Nuclear Modular Reactor Research and Development Consortium.

Dr. Smith has published 90+ papers and holds 12 patents. He has recently published a text book titled “Computational Fluid Dynamics for the Chemical and Petrochemical Process Industries” and has contributed chapters to 5 books (Encyclopedia of Renewable Energy Engineering, Densification impact on raw, chemically, and thermally pre-treated biomass: Physical properties and biofuels production, John Zink Combustion Handbook, Industrial Burner Handbook, Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook)

Dr. Smith has more than 30 years’ industrial experience in the chemical and petrochemical industries.  He has worked for the Dow Chemical Company, Cabot Corporation; Koch Industries-John Zink, and Idaho National Laboratory.  He serves as an expert witness for Gas Flares and Hydrocarbon Processing and has founded and led three startup companies.
