Ground Breaking Observations from 2025: A New look at Tornadoes and Hail

In situ observations of severe weather, including tornadoes and hail, have been ongoing for decades. Fueled by advancements in physical understanding and more recently huge strides in high resolution modelling, these observations and the data collection strategies we use have undergone significant changes in recent years. New observational tools have been created, providing new insights into severe weather processes. Utilizing these new tools, the 2025 field season proved to be an exceptional year for severe weather observations.

This talk will highlight some of the unique observations from the field this year collected by the National Severe Storms Laboratory, including remotely sensed observations inside tornadoes, near surface observations around tornadoes, and cutting edge observation of hail in free-fall. This talk will also explore the effort it takes to create these instruments, and to successfully deploy them into the field.
