Screaming cicada enthusiasts unite! We're looking to get together multiple times June 1st-June 3rd to observe, do science, and marvel at the mass emergence of Magicicada 13-year Brood XIX, which is the largest of all periodical cicada broods, and 17-year Brood XIII.

June 1, 2024 | 10 am - 4 pm - Brood XIX at Allerton Park & Retreat Center (515 Old Timber Rd, Monticello, IL 61856)

*Due to inclement weather, some programs have been cancelled and/or modified.

  • CICADA TALK, 10 - 11 am @ Greenhouse Auditorium (space limited): Dr. Katie Dana from the INHS will discuss Illinois' first dual emergence in 221 years.
  • CICADA DISPLAYS, 11 am - 12 pm @ Greenhouse Auditorium (space limited). Preserved cicada specimens and informal Q/A with Katie Dana and Tommy McElrath, INHS Insect Collections Manager
June 2, 2024 | 10 am - 4 pm - Brood XIII meet-up at Nachusa Grasslands (2075 Lowden Rd, Franklin Grove, IL 61031) 
  • CICADA TALK, 10 am @ 8772 S Lowden Rd, Franklin Grove IL: Dr. Katie Dana from the INHS will discuss Illinois' first dual emergence in 221 years.
  • GUIDED HIKE, 1 pm @ 2075 Lowden Rd, Franklin Grove, IL: Join a guided hike to observe cicadas and learn about their behavior, ecology, and ecosystem role 
  • SCIENCE STATIONS, 11:30 AM - 3 PM @ 2075 S Lowden Rd, Franklin Grove, IL | Visit booths from the Illinois Natural History Survey, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and U of I Entomology students. Chat with scientists, handle bugs, and learn how to contribute to science!
