Join CLACS in welcoming Andrea Ballestero (Anthropology, University of Southern California) for her talk "Joining forces with water! Deciphering aquifers and stretching the imagination downwards". Dr. Ballestero will talk about how people in Costa Rica are expanding their social circles, and connecting with new scientific and political resources to collectively decipher aquifers.

Joining forces with water! Deciphering aquifers and stretching the imagination downwards

As people come to terms with their sense of geological presence, they increasingly stretch their imagination downwards. By imagining how everyday activities reach into vast geological space, everyday people in Costa Rica are expanding their social circles, and connecting with new scientific and political resources to collectively decipher aquifers. In this talk I reflect on those efforts and think of them as gatherings of the imagination with models and data bases that make visible how by joining forces with water, the world inevitably expands downwards.
