Iceland is recognized globally for its strong social support and its progressive legal protections for LGBTQ+ people. In this study abroad course, students will explore the historical and geographical factors that contributed to building this inclusive social and legal climate. Using a global and comparative perspective, the course will consider how LGBTQ+ rights, identities, and lived experiences in Iceland intersect with broader social trends regarding equity, belonging, and social change around the globe today. Through the study and social analysis of history, culture, politics, education, and religion, students will explore both the progress Iceland has made and, looking beyond Iceland’s reputation as a “queer utopia,” discuss the challenges that remain.
