We are delighted to showcase the work of some of our most productive and creative faculty in this informal series of intellectually and spiritually invigorating presentations. You are invited to drop in when you can to learn about the exciting projects undertaken by our faculty.

11:00am-11:45am: Decker French, CAS Beckman Fellow 2023-24, Astronomy

Supermassive Black Hole Laboratories

When stars venture too close to supermassive black holes, strong gravitational tidal forces can tear stars apart. These events produce bright flares of light we can observe at large distances. Professor French will present recent work using these events to study supermassive black holes and their galactic environments.

Noon-12:45pm: Marius Junge, CAS Associate 2023-24, Mathematics

Let’s Talk About Noise

This presentation will investigate why noise in quantum devices is unavoidable, as of now. From a mathematical perspective noise can be both a blessing and a curse. In this talk about quantum information science Professor Junge will try to avoid to technical details as far as possible.
