The Women in Tech luncheon series is an informal networking event for Champaign-Urbana area women working in the technology sector. This event is free; however, registration is required by noon on June 5.
As an experimental physicist, diversity advocate, and science communicator, Dr. Nadya Mason is mentioned on many a formidable list — TED Talk presenters, Kavli Fellowship recipients, and National Academy of Sciences members, to name a few. In 2022, Mason was selected to direct the Beckman Institute, an internationally recognized interdisciplinary research center that brings together researchers from more than 40 campus departments to collaboratively address major scientific and technological challenges.
Professor Nadya Mason works at the intersection of complex materials, superconductivity, and nanotechnology. She is particularly recognized for her work elucidating the electronic properties of low-dimensional correlated materials, such as hybrid superconducting devices containing metal, graphene, or topological insulators. She received her bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University in 1995 and received her doctorate in physics in 2001 from Stanford University. Prior to joining the physics faculty at Illinois, Professor Mason was a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard University, where she collaborated with Professors Charles Marcus and Michael Tinkham on projects related to both carbon nanotubes and nanostructured superconductors. Her thesis research was on phase transitions in two-dimensional superconductors.
She has been a general Councilor of the American Physical Society (APS), a Chair of the APS Committee on Minorities, and currently serves as founding Director of the Illinois Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and the Director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Beyond teaching and research, Mason works to improve science communication and is also committed to increasing diversity in the physical sciences. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. She has also been appointed as a member of the National Quantum Initiative Advisory Committee by President Biden in December 2022.
