NCSA-related events

In collaboration with Alteryx and Phillips 66, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications is hosting the first-ever energy Datathon September 17-18. Students will compete in teams of 3–4 in this two-day event to solve examples of exciting and challenging energy problems companies face every day.

Members of the winning team will each receive a $1,000 prize bonus with second-place team members winning $500 each. Registrants will need to attend a one-hour virtual training session on September 15 or 16 and meals will be provided for participants over the course of the competition.

LEARNING AND INNOVATION THROUGH COMPETITION

In this Datathon, students will be given a sample challenge along with the training and tools needed for their team to work toward a common goal. Over the course of two days, students will work together using the appropriate software and data research technology to provide a solution for the challenge and present their results to a panel of judges. Teams will be announced at the kickoff event the first day.

Participants will receive valuable experience in teamwork and innovation, solving difficult problems through collaboration and opportunities to foster professional connections.

JUDGING CRITERIA

MODEL ASSESSMENT

The judges will score your model on the following criteria:

• Accuracy
  • How accurate and mathematically sound is the model?
  • How valid is the model compared to test sets?
• Insights
  • Can we use the model to help make better decisions?
  • Are the data source(s) used well justified?
• Creativity
  • Is the model unique and innovative?
  • Does the model harness other technology, datasets, APIs, etc.?

 

PRESENTATION ASSESSMENT

You will have five minutes to present and five minutes for Q&A. Your presentation will be assessed on the following criteria:

• Problem Solving Approach
  • What was your thought process for solving the problem?
  • Why did you solve the problem the way that you did?
• Process
  • What was the process for building the model?
  • What data sources and algorithms did you use?
• Insights
  • What were the key insights gained?
  • Why are the insights gathered important?
• Demo
  • How does the model work?
  • How was Alteryx used in your solution?
• Organization
  • Is the presentation well-organized – both slides and delivery?
