Microevolution of multi-drug resistant lineages of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius

Dr. Tauqeer Alam is a Research Assistant Professor, in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois, with joint appointment in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine and the Department of Pathobiology. Broadly, his research is focused
on understanding the origins and evolution of antibiotic resistance, and virulence in bacterial pathogens of human and veterinary importance. Dr. Alam utilizes high-throughput genomics, whole-genome phylogeny and a suite of advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic loci that have been under selection pressure, and are associated with any adaptation or phenotype that confers selective advantage to the bacteria. Using these approaches, he analyzes thousands of bacterial genomes to study emergence and transmission of antibiotic resistance, distribution of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as prophages on different genetic lineages, and host-specific colonization and virulence factors. Currently, Dr. Alam’s laboratory is trying to establish CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to genetically modify Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. This will allow determining the function of genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms that they have identified using whole genome analyses of these two Staphylococcus species. Dr. Alam is also involved in multiple metagenomics studies aimed at investigating the diversity and abundance of the bacterial community, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different animal infections.
