Mentors, Advisors, and Sponsors - You need them all!

Mentors, advisors, and sponsors are all important in your development as a scholar and researcher as you move through your CS career. In this session you will learn about how people in each of these roles will support your development and growth, how to connect with each, and the various opportunities we have within the Illinois CS community to connect with mentors, advisors, and sponsors!

Panelists 

Tiffani L. Williams

Tiffani L. Williams is a Teaching Professor and Director of Onramp Programs in the Department of Computer Science, and a Dean’s Fellow in Inclusion, Belonging, and Engagement in the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 2017 to 2020, she was the Director of Computer Science Programs and Professor of the Practice at Northeastern University-Charlotte. From 2005 to 2017, she was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University. Her research interests include computer science education, multiple pathway education, computational biology, and inclusive science communication.


Ruta Mehta

Ruta Mehta

Ruta Mehta is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Prior to joining UIUC, she did postdoc at Simons Institute for Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley (Aug'15 to Dec'15), and in College of Computing at Georgia Tech (Aug'12 to July'15, advisor: Prof. Vijay V. Vazirani). She received my Ph.D. in computer science from IIT-Bombay under the supervision of Prof. Milind Sohoni and Prof. Bharat Adsul, in August 2012. Her Ph.D. thesis titled "Nash Equilibrium Computation in Various Games" won the ACM India Doctoral Dissertation Award, 2012.
