Abstract:
Multimedia has played a significant role in driving Internet usage and has led to a range of technological advancements in the past few decades. With the rise of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) based immersive 3D technologies, multimedia is undergoing a fundamental shift in sharing experiences online, and continues to drive the future of the Internet. This talk will focus on the design and implementation of networked systems to support immersive 3D experiences. Specifically, I will go over two main threads of my research in this area: 1) a low latency distributed architecture for 3D scene capture pipeline, 2) a compression and streaming framework for immersive media that significantly reduces the bandwidth requirements while achieving a superior quality of experience. I will conclude the talk by discussing my future directions and some of the new systems challenges we need to tackle to realize the next generation immersive experiences.

Bio:
Mallesh Dasari is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University working with Anthony Rowe and Srinivasan Seshan. His work spans across Immersive Media, XR systems (Mixed Reality, AR/VR), Networks, Mobile, and Wearable Computing Systems. He received several awards at premier conferences in computer science including a best paper, best presentation, best demo, as well as an innovation award for his industry research. Before CMU, Mallesh received a PhD in computer science at Stony Brook University, where he was advised by Samir Das.
