Abstract

Do you wonder what you might do with your computing degree if you don't work in a traditional tech company? There are a ton of options where you can use your computing skills and have an exciting and fulfilling career. This session will feature panelists who can share their personal perspectives and professional experiences.  They will provide tips on how to find these non-traditional opportunities, as well as advice on how to succeed and things to watch out for.  Come with questions!

Kate Milleker

Kate Milleker graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2018 with a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Theater. She currently works in Chicago as a Creative Software Engineer for Envoy (formerly known as Leviathan), where she utilizes experiential technology to create entertaining installations. As a creative technologist, Kate uses real-time software, cameras, sensors, and touchscreens to build generative art, motion and gesture tracking systems, data visualizations, and customizable content for large-scale media walls. She has worked with clients like T-Mobile, McDonalds, Abbott, Cedars-Sinai, and the Museum of Science and Industry; recently, she helped make the new Super Nintendo World theme park at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.

Jayam Shah

Jayam is a UIUC alum who graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2021. Since graduation, he has worked as a software engineer at IMC Trading on their Exchange Connectivity team. He works primarily in C++ and focuses on building scalable, low-latency, high-throughput systems to process exchange feed and deliver market data to IMC’s trading execution systems.
