Deepak Vasisht
Abstract: Low Earth Orbit satellites are becoming increasingly prominent for Internet connectivity and Earth Observation. I will talk about challenges in this emerging space and our lab's recent work.
Bio: Deepak Vasisht is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at UIUC.
Matus Telgarsky
Abstract: I work in deep learning theory, which is a fun topic because it is completely broken. As with other developments which broke the broader community's theoretical understanding (e.g., AdaBoost in the 1990s, not the 1890s), the insights needed to make better sense of deep learning also lead to theoretical tools which help with entirely different fields. In this talk, I will discuss one such tool: the implicit preference of standard optimization algorithms for simple solutions.
