Title : Ideals, Determinants, and Straightening
Abstract: Polynomial ideals are key objects that appear behind the scenes of multiple problems in algebraic complexity, including polynomial factorization, polynomial identity testing, and the study of algebraic proof systems. From the viewpoint of complexity theory, ideals generated by a single polynomial are generally well-understood, but our knowledge of ideals with multiple generators is lacking. In this talk, I will describe some recent work that takes a first step towards understanding ideals with multiple generators, focusing on ideals generated by the r-by-r minors of an n-by-n matrix.
