Gaussian random fields are a mathematically convenient way of modeling noise. They are used in astronomy to model processes as varied as the initial conditions of the universe and the flickering of active galactic nuclei. One might hope that they could be used to model noise in astrophysical disks, which drives accretion, controls flickering in cataclysmic variables, makes flocculent spiral galaxies, and produces the resolved variable patterns seen by the Event Horizon Telescope in M87. Noise in disks, however, is inhomogeneous, anisotropic, and time dependent. I will describe a new method for constructing gaussian random field models for disks, and argue that it may be useful in many other contexts in astrophysics.
