“Designing stoichiometric materials with Eu3+ for photon-based quantum information storage”

Materials containing rare-earth cations are a promising platform for photon-based quantum information storage. However, these systems, typically utilizing dopant levels of rare-earth cations, exhibit inhomogeneous transition linewidths that prevent the resolution of hyperfine energy levels important for building qubits. Stoichiometric materials’ crystallographic spacing of rare-earth cations offers a solution by reducing inhomogeneous broadening while drastically increasing the number of rare-earth cations. Only one stoichiometric material, EuCl3∙6H2O, has been studied for these systems but requires deuteration to improve coherence time and isotopic purification to reduce the linewidth. We are approaching this materials science challenge with three goals in mind: accurate screening of previously un-synthesized materials with DFT, high quality growth of millimeter scale single crystals, and observation of narrow inhomogeneous linewidths without isotopic purification.
